The 2025 Christmas Lecture of the Irish Mathematical Society will take place on Monday December 15 at 3.30.

Robert Osburn, Boole Chair of Mathematics at University College Cork, will speak on

Unimodal sequences and mixed modularity

Abstract: The study of strongly unimodal sequences has recently attracted interest with connections to knot theory and modular forms. In this talk, we discuss two-parameter generalizations of Hecke-Appell type expansions for the generating functions of unimodal and special unimodal sequences due to Kim and Lovejoy and Bringmann and Lovejoy. In particular, we present their explicit representations as mixed false theta functions. This is joint work with Kevin Allen (UCC).

Venue: Room G.02, Western Gateway Building, University College Cork.

The talk will be for a general mathematical audience. Everyone is welcome. Coffee will be available before the talk. If you expect to attend, please let us know here (for coffee planning).
